1949
Harry Truman

Harry S. Truman was our nations 33rd President from 1945 to 1953.  Truman entered this Earth in Lamar, Missouri on May 8, 1884 and left December 26, 1972 at the age of 88 in Missouri.  He succeed the presidency near the end of WWII after the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt on April 12, 1945.  During the time between stepping into the presidency and the next official election Truman was responsible for dropping the atomic bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan.  Truman continued with FDR's plan of League of Nations and in October of 1945 the United Nation began operation.

It was an election year in 1948.  It was a close race between Republican Governor Thomas E. Dewey and Democrat Harry S. Truman.  Early in the election it looked as if Dewey was going to win the election.  Chicago Tribune started printing winning results.  The Chicago Tribune must have been red-faced with embarrassment when official results came in claiming that Truman won the electoral vote 303 to 189.  To add insult to injury the Democrats also took over control of the House and Senate.

That year Truman did a historical first for the realm of television.  His presidential inauguration, in 1949, was the first to nationally be on television.
